What is a Webtoon?

Webtoons (Hangul: 웹툰) are a type of digital comics (webcomics or digital manhwa) that originated in South Korea. While webtoons were mostly unknown outside of the country during their inception, there has been a surge in popularity internationally thanks in great part to most manhwa being read on smartphones.

New to the world of korean wave ? Can't decide which webtoon to watch first? Then this post is exactly where you are supposed to be.

I've been reading webtoons for a while, and trust me when I say they are the better versions of Japanese manga or other comics book. Some of the webtoons even have background music, which transports you into the webtoon world. Once you read webtoons , you will never be satisfied simple comic books ever.

The following are the best webtoons I've come across so far.

Review: Despite the popularity of webtoons, there are actually only few webtoons which has an amazing art. Dice is one of them. It gives you the sensation of an anime. The story itself is thrilling. The cliffhangers will make you skip your night sleep just read the latest episode. It is that much addicting no joke.

This webtoon is almost towards its end. It is divided into 4 seasons. It gives an actual insight to what extent a human will go in this competition world.

This webtoons also has an amazing collection of BACKGROUND MUSIC (BGM) which has received extremely positive reviews by the readers.

If you are looking for an anime that has action, adventure, dark, romance, high school life, handsome boy hero , average boy hero...then this is the ultimate webtoon for you.

Review: This webtoon again has one of the best art. Each character, especially the leads are extremely beautiful to an extent that they seem unreal. I personally feel that the art is one of the reasons why this webtoon is so popular.  This was the first webtoon that I read. It is ongoing, which is updated every wednesday.

If you are a girl who has always felt self conscious about her looks, then don't worry, the author designed this book exclusively for you. The beauty standards are increasing every day, to an extent that people feel that plastic surgery and makeup is the only way to survive. But can you really love yourself when you cannot love the face that is underneath?

There are moments in our lives when we don't care how we look, but the constant nagging, teasing and bullying forces us to meet the everyday beauty standards. This webtoon is based on this concept. As a girl , it is one of my "read the webtoon first thing in the morning". The two male leads are not just handsome, but they both have their individual identity with a heart touching background story.

Review:  When you live in a world surrounded by people who have special abilities and you are the only odd one out, then that makes you..unORDINARY.

It is an incredibly addicting series although the graphics aren't great as the first two I mentioned.

There is a lot of mystery and the entire plot is interesting, there is not a single moment which will force you to fast sweep.

This again is one of the popular series in the webtoon which is updated every Wednesday.

The concept itself is very unique, rather than making a character with superpowers and the rest normal humans, the writer made a character with no superpowers and the rest as superhumans. So even if the hero is ordinary by our standards, in the webtoon world he is not. Get ready to look at the ordinary things with an unusual sight , if you read this book.

4. Orange marmalade

Synopsis:

Review: The vampire concept is a must need everywhere. No matter how fast the time passes or what century you live in, there has to be a vampire story that will become a super dooper hit among the readers. Orange marmalade is that vampire revolutionary webtoon. An amazing plot, with the most realistic characters and concept, this webtoon will steal your heart till the end and will give it back to you wrapped in a beautiful gift wrapper in the form of an soulmelting ending.

This webtoon is so popular in Korea, that it has even been adopted to a television series of the same name

This webtoon will make you cry, laugh, swoon with love all at the same time.

5) My ID is Gangnam Beauty

Synopsis:

Kang Mi-rae (Im Soo-hyang) decides to get plastic surgery after years of being bullied because of her looks. Her "rebirth" seems successful at first, but as her life at the university unfolds, her plan starts to backfire. The pressure of being a "pretty girl" begins to pressure her and, worse, those who can see through her surgery ridicule her and tag her as the "Gangnam plastic surgery monster." The drama follows Mi-rae's story of recovering self-esteem as she gets to know her coursemate, and former schoolmate in middle school, Do Kyung-seok (Cha Eun-woo).

Review: We all live in a world of extremely high beauty standards. It isn't just because we want to be beautiful, but also because we will be criticized if we aren't. And this fear of criticism and rejection forces us to undergo extreme measures.

My ID is gangnam beauty is based on this very concept. The lead character undergoes plastic surgery, so as to avoid the bullying and gain confidence. On the first sight it will make us feel, " damn I don't wish to read a comic, where the lead isn't pretty!"

I felt some of these emotions too. However I had already watched the korean drama, so I knew that the webtoon was bound to be awesome. And I was right. It way exceeded my expectations. This webtoon will make you reflect on your actions, make you realise why some people see plastic surgery as their only silver lining in the cloud.
But haters are going to hate you no matter what you do. What matters is self confidence. Self love.

And in a world where all of us suffer from some of dejection in a day to day basis, this webtoon might actually help you to overcome it.
